Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
